Last week, we participated in a high-impact, four-day capacity-building workshop on Health System Strengthening and Annual Operational Plan (AOP) Development in Owerri.

The workshop was organized by the Imo State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (SMoH) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and key partners. It aimed to strengthen planning capacity across the state and align the 2025 AOP with the Health Sector Strategic Blueprint (2023โ€“2027).

Key outcomes included the development of a draft, data-driven 2025 AOP; strengthened leadership and problem-solving capacity; hands-on training in the digital AOP platform; and a localized roadmap for implementing strategic goals across LGAs.

In her address, Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Chioma Vivian Egu, underscored the need for investment in leadership, data use, and LGA engagement to drive improvements in maternal health, vaccine uptake, and overall service delivery.

HSDF supported the integration of non-communicable disease (NCD) priorities, particularly diabetes and hypertension, into the state’s planning processes. Adaeze Stella Obison of HSDF highlighted the importance of local capacity building, data utilization, and inclusive collaboration.

Post-workshop, we will continue providing mentoring and technical assistance as the SMoH as they step down training to LGAs, ensuring alignment with national guidelines sustainable implementation at the grassroots level.
