The Integrated Diabetes Awareness and Care (DAC II) Project, led by HSDF in collaboration with FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), is bringing diabetes prevention and care directly to communities in four Abuja area councils namely: AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, and Gwagwalada.

In April, the project expanded its screening efforts to high-traffic areas, including Wuse, Old Garki, Kado Fish, and Gudu markets. Over 1,000 individuals were screened for Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), resulting in 20 new diagnoses and more than 60 referrals for follow-up care.

This community engagement model—providing services in familiar spaces—has proven highly effective, offering education, screenings, and support directly to market traders and the public. Additionally, outreach is expanding to religious spaces through roundtable discussions with community leaders.

To date, the project has screened over 13,326 individuals for T2DM and reached more than 172,944 people with awareness messages across the FCT. Furthermore, 573 individuals have been referred to experts for further care.

Looking ahead, we will continue our outreach with week-long activities in the NYSC camps, furthering our commitment to raising awareness and promoting healthier lifestyles.
