HSDF reaffirmed its leadership in strengthening Nigeria’s response to non-communicable diseases through its technical contribution to the finalization and validation of the Revised National Guideline for the Prevention, Control and Management of Diabetes Mellitus.

Convened by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMoHSW) with support from CHAI, the validation meeting brought together stakeholders from government, academia, consulting, and development partner organizations to review the revised recommendations and agree on pathways for publication, dissemination, and implementation.

Building on its role as lead consultant for the development of the 2018 national diabetes guideline under the Integrated Diabetes Awareness and Care (IDAC) project, HSDF provided technical input to ensure the revised guideline reflects current evidence while remaining responsive to Nigeria’s health system realities.

Discussions focused particularly on making the guideline practical for use at the Primary Health Care (PHC) level, while retaining the technical depth required for secondary and tertiary care. Stakeholders also considered how global recommendations can be adapted to local service-delivery contexts, available resources, and implementation capacity.

This engagement also aligns with HSDF’s ongoing work under the NCDI Phase 3 project, which is supporting stronger systems for the prevention and management of NCDs and advancing the operationalization of integrated NCD care across levels of the health system.

Through its continued partnership with the FMoHSW, HSDF is supporting the transition from policy to practice, including publication and dissemination of the revised guideline and its operationalization at PHC and secondary-care levels through the upcoming PEN-Plus pilot.
