Technical Assistance for Coordinating Nigeria’s Immunisation Financing

Timeline: November 2020 – May 2021  |  Status: Completed

Nigeria.

Project Overview

Sustaining immunisation programmes requires reliable financing and effective coordination of the resources needed to deliver vaccines and related services. Within a national health system, this also requires alignment between health priorities and the institutions responsible for public budgeting and resource allocation.

The Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF) implemented the Technical Assistance for Coordinating Nigeria's Immunisation Financing project between November 2020 and May 2021.

Funded by Duke University, the engagement provided support to the Budget Office of the Federation of Nigeria and focused on immunisation financing.

Immunisation programmes require sustained financial commitments to support effective delivery. Ensuring that these needs are appropriately considered within government financing processes requires coordination between health sector priorities and national budgeting institutions.

Where financing responsibilities involve multiple actors and processes, gaps in coordination can make it more difficult to align available resources with programme requirements.

Strengthening coordination around immunisation financing can therefore support more informed consideration of immunisation needs within public financial planning and budgeting processes.

HSDF provided technical assistance focused on the coordination of immunisation financing, with the Budget Office of the Federation identified in the project repository as the institution supported through the engagement.

The assignment centred on:

  • Providing technical assistance related to immunisation financing.
  • Supporting coordination around the financing of Nigeria’s immunisation programme.
  • Engaging with the Budget Office of the Federation within the context of immunisation financing.
  • Contributing health financing expertise to support the institutional processes surrounding immunisation funding.

The project repository does not provide further information on specific analytical methodologies, financing instruments, budget amounts, recommendations or measurable outcomes. These have therefore not been attributed to the project.

Financing is a critical component of a sustainable immunisation system. Beyond securing resources, effective financing requires coordination between health priorities and the institutions responsible for planning and managing public expenditure.

Through this engagement, HSDF contributed technical support at the intersection of immunisation and public financing, supporting the Budget Office of the Federation within the broader effort to coordinate Nigeria’s immunisation financing.

The assignment further demonstrates the role that health financing expertise can play in supporting essential public health programmes and strengthening the institutional foundations required for their sustainability.
