The Ministry of Health, Directorate of Research in The Gambia has launched its first-ever health research agenda. The development of the health research agenda was participatory and inclusive of multiple stakeholders, with Technical Assistance (TA) support from the Health Strategy Delivery Foundation (HSDF) , which allowed opportunities to incorporate critical policy, public health needs, and ongoing reforms in health delivery in the country.
Speaking at the launch, the Director of Health Research, The Gambia Sainey Sanneh said:
“The launch of the health research agenda is born of a necessary collaboration between the government, private sector, stakeholders, and development partners. This effort has prioritized a process of developing a robust document that identifies health research and a roadmap to implementation towards better coordination, collaboration, and an innovative cost-effective approach in health care delivery in the Gambia.”
An Associate Director with HSDF, Dr. Yewande Ogundeji commended the Ministry of Health, The Gambia for its leadership in fostering partnerships, encouraging more countries in Africa to adopt strategic health delivery agenda to rapidly improve health delivery outcomes in their countries:
“I am glad that I had the opportunity to lead the HSDF team that provided TA support for this engaging process of developing and officially launching the first-ever health research agenda in The Gambia. The government has played a pivotal role in ensuring strategic health care delivers real benefits to its people; first through the Primary Health Care system to all areas of health management and access.”
Developing a health research agenda is a critical step in aligning health systems research to policy needs and translating research into policy and action.
