In response to the commitment shown by the governments and National Blood Services of Liberia, Malawi, and Rwanda to enhance their safe blood systems, HSDF, serving as a core partner of the Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) Accelerator in the region, is spearheading a cross-country learning initiative in Windhoek Namibia. This 3-day event organized under the Safe-Blood Project, is tailored to support the National Blood Transfusion Services of these nations with focus on two key themes, namely:

  • Enhancing sustainable and innovative financing for national safe blood services.
  • Improving the generation and utilization of routine safe blood data for effective decision-making and performance management.

The event kicked off yesterday with an exhilarating field trip to the Namibian Blood Transfusion Service, where participants had the opportunity to observe various aspects of the blood donation process, from registration to blood separation, quality control, and data management. After the tour, there was an engaging session with the Namibian management team, where delegates from the participating countries had the chance to ask questions and gain deeper insights into the operations of the center. Topics covered included the daily operations, strategies for donor mobilization and retention, as well as discussions on innovative technologies such as blood fractionation and plasma apheresis, etc.
