Diabetes Awareness and Care (DAC) Project Holds Q1 Stakeholder Meeting

Following the one-day data review meeting with the 56 health facilities on the DAC project in Imo state, Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF) in collaboration with the Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs) desk, Public Health division of the Imo State Ministry of Health (SMoH) and the Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHCDA) convened the Q1 stakeholder meeting on 9th March 2020 at the Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency.

The meeting was aimed at deliberating on the policy implications for Type II Diabetes Mellitus, as well as hypertension prevention and care in Imo state; based on emerging data and insights from the 56 health facilities and selected communities on the DAC project.
HSDF, being the technical partner for the project in Imo state facilitated a multi-stakeholder dialogue on the implications of the current prevalence of DM, referral pathways of care as well as the cost of care and other deterrents to healthcare access for NCDs in the state.

Each stakeholder reflected on their roles in improving the care for NCDs in the state, pledging to improve advocacy and activities within their purview to drive better outcomes for the affected population and those at risk of developing Type II Diabetes Mellitus.

In attendance were Dr. Perry Njoku (Executive Secretary, Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency); Dr. Uduji (Chief Medical Director, Imo State Specialist Hospital Umuguma); Dr. Nwambara (Chief Executive, Hospitals’ Management Board); Dr. Anthony Anyanwu (President, Diabetes Association of Nigeria, Imo state chapter and a member of the DAC project Steering Committee); Dr. Patrick Iwuchukwu (representing the Executive Secretary, Imo State Health Insurance Agency); Dr. Adebi, (Deputy Non-Communicable Diseases Desk officer – Imo State Ministry of Health); Dr. Emeka Okere (Director Community Health Services, Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency), Chioma Nnajiofor (Centre For Family Health Initiative, State program coordinator) and implementing partners.

The Diabetes Awareness and Care project is a three-year World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) project, jointly implemented by the Federal Ministry of Health and HSDF. The project commenced in 2018 while health facility and community-based implementation commenced following training of front-line workers in April 2019.

The second quarter stakeholder meeting is scheduled to hold in June 2020.
