TIC au service de la santé
Timeline: Août 2016 – Août 2017 | Status: Completed
Nigeria.
Project Overview
Digital technologies are increasingly transforming how health systems operate, creating new opportunities to improve service delivery, strengthen data management, and enhance decision-making. Recognising the potential of technology to address persistent health system challenges, the Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF), with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, implemented the ICT4Health project between Août 2016 and Août 2017.
The initiative sought to leverage information and communication technologies (ICT) to strengthen health system performance and improve the availability and use of health information. At a time when many health programmes relied heavily on paper-based processes and fragmented information systems, the project explored practical approaches for integrating technology into healthcare management and programme implementation.
By promoting digital solutions and strengthening the systems that support their use, ICT4Health contributed to broader efforts to modernise health system operations and improve the flow of information needed for effective planning, monitoring, and service delivery.
Health systems depend on timely and reliable information to function effectively. However, fragmented data systems, manual reporting processes, and limited access to real-time information often make it difficult for decision-makers to monitor performance, identify challenges, and respond quickly to emerging needs.
As digital technologies became increasingly accessible, there was an opportunity to harness ICT tools to strengthen health system efficiency, improve data quality, and support better decision-making across different levels of the health sector.
HSDF worked with stakeholders to identify opportunities for applying technology to health system challenges and strengthening digital health capabilities. The project focused on:
- Promoting the use of information and communication technologies in healthcare.
- Strengthening systems for health information management and reporting.
- Supporting data-driven planning and decision-making.
- Exploring innovative digital approaches to improve programme implementation.
- Enhancing access to information for health managers and stakeholders.
- Contributing to the broader adoption of technology-enabled health solutions.
ICT4Health helped advance conversations around the role of technology in strengthening health systems and improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria. By supporting the integration of digital approaches into health sector operations, the project contributed to efforts to build more responsive, data-driven, and efficient health systems.
The lessons from ICT4Health continue to reflect the growing importance of digital transformation in achieving stronger health outcomes and more effective healthcare management.
