Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), FCT Department of Public Health, FCT Primary Healthcare Board, and Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF) conducted coaching and mentoring visits to 48 health facilities (public and private) on the Diabetes Awareness and Care (DAC) Project in the FCT.

The visits, which held from 5th-19th July 2021, aimed to review the use of data collection tools, identify errors and provide feedback to the visited facilities within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Bwari Area Council. Furthermore, knowledge on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM), as well as the screening techniques and referrals were appraised with appropriate corrections provided as required. In some facilities, new focal persons were identified for the project and onsite training was immediately provided to them.

Out of the 54 facilities on the project, six of these were inaccessible due to security challenges. To ensure these facilities also benefit from the exercise, the visitation team plans to provide mentorship to them at a later date.

While several challenges encountered by the team were immediately resolved, some others were addressed by providing feasible timelines for their resolution. Overall, the visited facilities expressed their gratitude to the visitation team and requested for more of such visits in the future.

The DAC project is a three-year project implemented in Imo State and the FCT. Funded by the World Diabetes Federation, it is being executed by the Non-Communicable Disease Division of FMoH and HSDF.

The project aims to improve the awareness, access to care and utilization of T2DM data in Imo and FCT by September 2021. To achieve these goals, we deploy various approaches such as advocacy to multiple stakeholders, community education, sensitization of health workers, policy development, training, and performance management.
