Improving Health Outcomes by
Strengthening Supply Chains

Current Situation

The majority of Nigeria and other African countries often suffer stock-outs of essential medicines and commodities, particularly at the service delivery points. This is largely due to convoluted, multi-parallel supply chain systems funded by multiple donors, partners, and governments.

Our Approach

HSDF supports the delivery of the right product, with the right quality, at the right place, time, and cost while maximizing resources and technology. We provide training and support to stakeholders to enhance their planning and decision-making across a range of supply chain domains. These include governance, logistics-management information systems, inventory management, and financial sustainability.

Results

Over the years, HSDF has collaborated with state governments to uncover the drivers of stock-outs at service delivery points, the weaknesses in-state supply chain systems, and supported the design and development of sustainable supply chain systems. This helps guarantee essential commodities, particularly Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) drugs at critical service delivery points.

Through the Shugabanci project in Kaduna State, we worked with the Logistics Management Coordination Unit of the Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Development Agency to develop and institute supply chain data and performance management routines. This involved developing an excel template to review and analyze existing supply chain data sets.
