In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), HSDF is supporting the Federal Ministry of Health Non-Communicable Diseases (FMOH NCD) division to develop a Multisectoral Action Plan (MSAP) on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). The MSAP aims to involve the Health and Non-health sectors who play a critical role in the control of NCDs. HSDF supported the FMOH and WHO to develop a draft plan by adapting WHO best buy interventions to combat Nigeria’s most common NCDs which range from cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, respiratory disorders, sickle cell disease to road traffic injuries, interpersonal violence, and substance abuse.

A 3-day WHO-led technical meeting began on the 7th of August where technical representatives from various Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs) involved in NCD control were invited to review and agree on the feasibility of the cost-effective and high-impact interventions to combat NCDs. In attendance were representatives from the FMOH, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Federal Ministry of Justice (FMOJ), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration, and Control (NAFDAC) amongst others.

HSDF’s Public Health Advisory Team co-facilitated the meeting and provided technical support to the review process which covered key areas on governance, prevention and management of NCDs, research on NCDs, and monitoring and evaluation of NCDs. The development of an implementation plan with prioritized intervention areas and responsible parties was also a crucial part of the meeting.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with a reviewed context-specific action plan and widespread anticipation amongst all present for the upcoming multi-sectoral collaboration for the control NCDs in Nigeria.
