The flag-off ceremony for the third batch of Officer-In-Charge (OIC) management training, facilitated by the Kaduna State PHC Management Capacity Strengthening Project (KPMSP), was held on 5th February 2021 at the Institute for Agricultural Research Conference Hall, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. This batch comprises 32 participants from priority Primary Healthcare Centres in Igabi, Kaduna North, and Soba Local Government Areas.
Chairing the ceremony was the Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Board (SPHCB), Dr. Hamza Abubakar. Also present were the Director of Human Resources & Training from the Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Illiya Duniah, a representative from the Shehu Idris College of Health Science & Technology, Dr. Yusuf Kuyello, the Zonal Coordinator of the SPHCB’s Zone 1, Mallam Muhammad Madaki, and the KPMS Project team.
This event allowed participants to better understand the need for the management training, recognize its relevance to the discharge of their duties, and appreciate the importance, which the Kaduna State PHCB attaches to such capacity building. The ceremony’s overarching objective was to enlighten the OICs on how their roles have evolved. The ES also emphasized to the OICs that their success in managing their PHCs is critical to the overall goal of improving the access of citizens to quality healthcare in Kaduna State.
Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF) is the lead technical and implementing partner to the SPHCB on this project and coordinates the training’s effective delivery. Additionally, HSDF supports the state in developing systems that would assist the OICs in discharging their management duties more efficiently.
In March 2020, Development Alternatives Inc. (DAI) engaged HSDF and Solina Centre for International Development and Research (SCIDaR) to implement the KPMSP, which aims to improve the management capacity of PHC managers through the development of systems and capacity building interventions to address gaps in PHC management for quality service delivery. The KPMSP team has begun implementing interventions in two phases: Systems Development and Capacity Building with intensive engagement with relevant health sector stakeholders within SMOH, KSPHCB, and beyond. The management training currently being conducted are part of the capacity building phase of the project and are proceeding in six batches of PHC Managers from across 107 priority PHCs in 10 LGAs in Kaduna State. While the first and second batches were trained from 16th – 26th November 2020 and 30th November – 10th December 2020, respectively; the third and ongoing batch runs from 1st-11th February 2021.
The remaining three batches would be trained in the coming weeks.
