Globally, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) have been identified as the leading cause of death. Nigeria, however, not only battles the burden of NCDs, it also combats with communicable diseases; thus, facing a double burden.
In a bid to create a synergy among partners involved in the NCD space for resource optimization, accelerated results, and shared experiences, Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF) was invited by FHI 360 alongside other stakeholders such as the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), Private Sector Investors, Pharmaceuticals and Academics to participate in an innovation dialogue on strategies for subsidized or free drugs and testing for Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and Hypertension especially at the primary level of care.
This event presented academics the opportunity to share the current status of hypertension and diabetes in Nigeria along the lines of epidemiology, economic burden, treatment gaps, possible solutions, and treatment guidelines. Representatives of patient groups also shared their experiences regarding treatment uptake and retention.
The Director of the Public Health Advisory at HSDF, Dr. Lilian Anomnachi, being a panelist at the event, shared the successes of the organization both at policy and project implementation levels.
HSDF- a thought and technology leader in NCDs, is currently implementing a three-year WDF-funded Diabetes Awareness and Care (DAC) project in two Nigerian States. In addition, the organization has supported the Federal Ministry of Health to develop a National Diabetes Management and Care Guideline, as well as a National Multisectoral Action Plan on the prevention and control of NCDs.
The session, which was held on 21st January 2020 at the FHI 360 Abuja office, ended with a brainstorming session on innovative financing options for Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus to improve outcomes.
