The Diabetes Awareness and Care (DAC) Phase II Project recently convened the 3rd Steering Committee (STEERCO) meeting with 14 key stakeholders from the Imo State Ministry of Health. The project aims to raise awareness on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension, reaching 50,000 people in Imo by 2026, Improve the quality of care by training and mentoring healthcare workers and community-based organizations by 2026, Enhance state-level coordination, planning, and oversight for diabetes and hypertension programs, Improve the availability, quality, and use of T2DM and hypertension data for decision-making across the state by 2026.

Aligned with Objective 3, this meeting focused on strengthening state-level coordination, planning, and oversight for diabetes and hypertension programs. It brought together a distinguished group, including the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Secondary and Tertiary Healthcare (@Chukwuemeka Ubaka), the Permanent Secretary, the Director of Public Health, representatives from the Imo State Health Insurance Agency (ISHIA), the Hospital Management Board, IMSUTH, and ISSH.

In his opening remarks, the Honourable Commissioner praised HSDF’s impact and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the DAC Phase II Project. He emphasized his open-door policy and willingness to assist whenever needed. The HSDF team presented a comprehensive program and data report for the quarter, highlighting significant progress in the state. In response, the Commissioner encouraged utilizing hospitals under the State Health Insurance Scheme for referrals and expressed excitement for upcoming activities, including the State NCD Partners Meeting, HCW Refresher Training, and performance/data review meetings.
