The representatives of the Federal Ministry of Health [FMOH], the Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation [HSDF], and Society for Women’s Development and Empowerment of Nigeria (SWODEN), paid an advocacy visit (on Tuesday the 24th of March) to the FCT Primary Healthcare Board on the DAC Project. The delegation was led by the National Coordinator of the NCD Division of the FMOH, Dr. Nnenna Ezeigwe, and the Director of the Public Health Advisory [PHA] Team of HSDF, Dr. Lilian Anomnachi.
The visiting team was welcomed by the Executive Secretary (ES) of the FCT PHC Board, Dr. Iwot Ndaeyo, and the Director for Disease Control, Dr. Yakubu Mohammed who pledged their support to the project and expressed their positive anticipation for a successful outcome from the imminent collaboration. Speaking on behalf of SWODEN, its Executive Director, Mrs. Maimuna Mohammed expressed her delight at the collaboration and solicited the FCT PHC Board’s support to facilitate stakeholder engagement in the FCT as SWODEN implements the community component of the project.
The DAC Project aims to improve health outcomes by strengthening evidence-based programming and policy-making to improve Diabetes prevention and care services through stakeholder advocacy, information sharing and education at the community level, sensitization of health workers, development of national guidelines, health worker training, equipment supplies, and performance management.
NCDs are now the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and in 2016, was responsible for 71% of all mortality and morbidity globally. Beyond their implications for health outcomes, NCDs also present an economic challenge, with studies projecting a cumulative loss in output of approximately US$7trillion between 2011 and 2025 in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) due to NCDs. The DAC project was developed in response to this growing need for improved awareness and care for Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs) globally and will be implemented in the FCT and Imo States of Nigeria.
