To ensure the quality and consistency of data generated in Kano State, the State Primary Health Care Management Board (SPHCMB) has been supporting the monthly data review process at the Local Government Area (LGA) level. Although the focus has been largely on routine immunization, the board aims to expand the scope to include the review of data from other PHC services.

To assist the board in achieving its goal of generating quality data, Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF) provided support to the Directorate of Planning Monitoring and Evaluation (DPM&E) to develop a data validation tool and standard operating procedures for its implementation. A pilot test was conducted using the tool in two LGAs in the state – Gwale and Minjibir. This activity was facilitated by representatives from DPM&E, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and Solina group.

Following the pilot phase, an LGA review meeting was held with facility staff and LGA team members to review the data generated, monitor the consistency and completeness of data at the administrative levels using the tool. This meeting also provided an opportunity to verify data across different data sources, analyze performance in key indicators against National and state targets. Besides, trends were evaluated, and an action plan was developed to bridge gaps, use data to inform decisions, and document changes in the improvement of the quality of data.

The validation tool developed by HSDF has now been scaled up to all 44 LGAs in the state and is now consistently used during Primary Healthcare service data validation meetings.
