The symposium themed Advancing Community Health Worker Programs to Build Resilient and Equitable Health Systems that Accelerate Primary Health Care for Universal Health Coverage was aimed at facilitating a global exchange of knowledge and solutions for scaling and sustaining community health programs towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The 5-day event brought together delegations from across the globe, comprising over 600 government representatives, donors and partners such as USAID, UNICEF, The Global Fund, WHO, GFF, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, giz, R4D, etc, as well as CHWs from 46 countries. It provided a unique platform to amplify the centrality of the health workforce, particularly Community Health Workers (CHWs), in ensuring a resilient health system for the future.
Speaking at the event, the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor highlighted the importance of an integrated and active Community Health Workforce and pledged her continued support to global CHW advocacy for professionalization and proper remuneration. Africa’s first female president and Liberia’s 24th head of state, Her Excellency, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was also in attendance and delivered the keynote address, calling for more recognition for CHWs and the work they do, stating – ‘All of us are connected to the health of all of us.’
HSDF participated in planning and facilitation of the Symposium as a consortium partner in the Health Systems Strengthening Accelerator.
