Reimagining Primary Health Care for a Healthier Africa

Earlier this week, the Africa Primary Health Care Forum (APHCF) convened leading voices in Abuja to chart a new course for universal health coverage and health security across Africa.

Held at the Lake Green Field Hotel, the forum featured influential stakeholders including the Special Adviser to the President on Public Health, Federal Ministry of Health, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), The World Bank, World Health Organization, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., and others. It served as a powerful platform to exchange ideas, spotlight innovations, and shape the future of PHC systems on the continent.

Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation led a panel discussion on “Health Workforce – Leveraging Community-Based Innovations to Enhance Equity and Access in PHC Systems.” The session addressed pressing issues like CHW burnout, community engagement, and the need for supportive work environments.

Abolade Oyelere shared insights on CHW recruitment in LMICs, calling for institutional frameworks, fair pay, and digital tools to drive accountability, scalability, and sustainability.

Panelists united in a call for human-centered investments and policies to empower frontline health workers – key to building resilient and equitable PHC systems across Africa.
