Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) remain vital healthcare providers in many communities. Last week, the Lagos State Ministry of Health (LSMOH) and FHI 360 hosted a 3-day workshop at the Lagos State Chamber of Commerce, focused on equipping TBAs with standardized guidelines to ensure safe maternal care and prompt referrals for high-risk cases.

Led by Dr. Oludara Folasade, Director of Family Health and Nutrition, the workshop brought together key health officials and global partners like CHAI, UNFPA, and MRH Collective. Experts from LSMOH, including Dr. Olajumoke Oyenuga and Mrs. Aketi Olusola, contributed to drafting a curriculum that reflects both global best practices and local realities.

HSDF, led by Project Aisha’s Project Manager, Dr. Olasunmbo Makinde, supported the curriculum development process, ensuring its relevance and quality. The draft will now undergo validation before statewide implementation, strengthening maternal healthcare in Lagos and beyond.

This effort underscores our commitment to reduce maternal mortality and improve the quality of maternal and newborn care across Africa.
