Earlier this month, health leaders from Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT met in Abuja for the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NSHRII) Leadership, Health Systems Strengthening & Planning Workshop, a flagship event convened by the Federal Ministry of Health.
This dynamic 5-day workshop deepened capacity for designing technically sound, fiscally realistic Annual Operational Plans (AOPs) aligned with national priorities like the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) through Project HOPE and MAMII. Participants – drawn from Ministries of Health, Planning Commissions, and M&E units – gained hands-on experience with the new web-based AOP tool, exploring priority setting, costing, resource mapping, and performance tracking.
HSDF actively participated in the group sessions, contributing to problem identification and analysis by presenting the group’s identified issues. This was in line with HSDF’s ongoing support to Kaduna State. Discussions focused on training on adaptive and systems leadership, evidence-based decision-making, and cascading reforms to LGAs and health facilities. Technical modules on bottleneck analysis, scenario planning, and data-driven dialogue sharpened participant capabilities for real-world impact.
This milestone event is a significant step toward a resilient, decentralized, and data-driven health system in Nigeria.
