In line with efforts to use community structures in strengthening the management capacity of health care workers in Kaduna State, Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation (HSDF), facilitated training sessions for 70 Ward Development Committee (WDC) chairmen and secretaries, representing 35 ward priority Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Sabongari, Soba and Zaria Local Government Areas of Kaduna State.
The training was held at the Institute of Agricultural Research Conference Centre, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, from 18th- 20th May 2021.
The participants were trained on using data for decision-making at both facility and community levels, establishing and supporting feedback mechanisms from the community to the PHC facility, PHC microplanning and budgeting procedures, financial accountability, and support to PHC drugs and commodities supply chain management, among others.
The Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Hamza Abubakar attended the flag-off ceremony. Thus, providing the participants the opportunity to discuss some of the challenges experienced in facility-community relations. These include community management of PHC facility staff absenteeism, selection of signatories to the PHC facility bank accounts, provision and payment of security guards, and the proper composition of a typical WDC in terms of gender. Some of these challenges were immediately resolved, while the ES assured participants that circulars would be disseminated to address the pending issues.
In March 2020, Development Alternatives Inc. (DAI) engaged HSDF and Solina Centre for International Development and Research (SCIDaR) to implement the Kaduna State PHC Management Capacity Strengthening Plan (KPMSP). This intervention is aimed at improving the management capacity of PHC managers through the development and deployment of systems; and capacity building – both in-class and on-the-job.
The management themes of the project are Data Management, Planning & Community Relations, Quality Management, Human Resource Management, Supply Chain & Inventory Management, Financial Management and Facility Management.
