Through shared experiences and professional support, Project Aisha’s G-ANC initiative is transforming prenatal care for Lagos mothers and caregivers

This week, we launched a Group Antenatal Care (G-ANC) initiative in three private health facilities across Lagos State, revolutionizing prenatal care through personalized care, peer support, and facilitated learning. This innovative model of prenatal care This innovative approach brings together expectant mothers at similar stages of pregnancy for group-based prenatal sessions, fostering shared experiences and mutual support.

The program began with the training of 15 participants, held from November 25 to 28, 2024, in Ikeja, Lagos. Using a dynamic training model—featuring didactic sessions, roleplays, case studies, and in-facility coaching—the initiative equips healthcare providers to implement G-ANC effectively.

Reflecting on the impact of the initiative:

  • Nurse Olamilokun of G&I Maternity Home stated, “G-ANC fosters meaningful interactions between providers and clients while encouraging peer-to-peer connections among expectant mothers. This approach builds trust and bridges communication gaps.”
  • Nurse Agu Victoria of Longe Medical Center added, “This new knowledge will help me better engage with my ANC clients. I plan to create a private space at my facility for G-ANC, encouraging open communication.”

The MSD-for-Mothers-funded project, implemented by a consortium including HSDF, mDoc, Ingress Health Partners, and IHI, aims to ensure safe, quality maternal care for every woman, enhancing maternal healthcare experiences and outcomes in Lagos State.
